There’s something magical about guiding a group along Ireland’s Beara Way — especially when the weather keeps you on your toes, the coastal views steal your breath, and the camaraderie turns strangers into lifelong friends.
This past month, I had the pleasure of leading nine incredible women from Seattle on a 7-day hiking adventure across this rugged peninsula. From ancient standing stones to wild Atlantic cliffs, sleepy villages to friendly B&Bs, the Beara Way delivered everything you’d hope for in an Irish long-distance trail—plus a few surprises.
Why the Beara Way?
Often overshadowed by the more famous Kerry Way, the Beara Peninsula offers a quieter, wilder experience. Our route covered a mix of coastal paths, mountain trails, and country lanes, with plenty of sheep, cows, and even beautiful ponies and horses keeping us company.
This isn’t an easy hike at times — the weather can be tough, and some sections are steep — but the rewards (think: empty beaches, 5,000-year-old stone circles, and cliff-top views) make every step worth it.
Our 7-Day Beara Way Itinerary
Day 1: Kenmare to Lauragh
We kicked off just outside Kenmare, easing into the hike with rolling hills and lush valleys. Our first stop was Lauragh, where we stayed at a fantastic family-run B&B (highly recommend — warm hospitality and a proper Irish welcome!).
Day 2: Lauragh to Ardgroom
Next, we trekked toward Ardgroom, passing ancient standing stones and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in West Cork. That evening, we rested in Eyeries, one of Ireland’s most colourful villages.
Day 3: Eyeries to Allihies – Coastal Heaven
A highlight for many: the walk into Allihies, a postcard-perfect fishing village.
Day 4: Dursey Island
We planned to take the Dursey Island Cable Car, but high winds had other ideas — so we explored locally instead, discovering hidden coves.
Day 5: Allihies to Castletownbere
After a hearty Irish breakfast, we hiked into Castletownbere, the biggest town on the peninsula.
Day 6: Bere Island
We took a short ferry to Bere Island, where we visited the lighthouse and soaked in unreal 360° views — with sunshine no less!
Day 7: Final Day, Kenmare to Killarney (Via the Kerry Way)
We wrapped up our adventure with a bus back to Kenmare, then a leisurely walk along the Kerry Way to Killarney. The group treated themselves to a well-earned luxury stay at the Lake Hotel, where they relaxed by the water before flying home.
What Made This Trip Special?
Beyond the landscapes, this hike was about connection. Seven days on the trail gave everyone time to share stories, laugh at wrong turns, and bond over blister plasters. By the end, we weren’t just a guide and clients — we were friends.

Thinking of a guided hike of The Beara Way?
If you’re considering this route, here are my top tips:
- Pack for all weather – We had sun, wind, and rain in a single day!
- Stay in local B&Bs – The hospitality is unbeatable.
- Allow time for detours – Some of the best moments happen off-plan.
