Hike the Coomloughra Horseshoe

Located in the MacGillycuddy Reeks, County Kerry, the Coomloughra Horseshoe is one of Ireland’s classic ridge walks. This challenging loop summits the three highest peaks in Ireland: Beenkeragh (1,010m), Carrauntoohil (1,038m), and Caher (1,001m). The complete ascent and descent typically takes 7 to 8 hours.

The hike begins at the Hydro Road in Glencar, County Kerry. Follow the dirt trail up to Lough Eighter, then ascend some steep ground to Cnoc Louchtair, Skregmore, and Stumpa Barr na hAbhann.

From here, the route continues onto the Beenkeragh ridge. This knife-edge ridge, exposed in sections, requires some scrambling. Hikers are rewarded with magnificent views overlooking Coomloughra Lake and Glen, and Coimín Uachtair Lake, the highest lake in Ireland (for those brave enough for a swim!). The Beenkeragh ridge leads to the top of O’Shea’s Gully, providing access to the ascent of Carrauntoohil.

After descending Carrauntoohil, a well-worn path leads to the summit of Caher, Ireland’s third-highest mountain.
